A recent study conducted by the University of Southern California has produced some extremely promising results in the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease. (Science Daily Article about the study)
The study found that a combination of specific compounds found in green tea (EGCG) and carrots (ferulic acid), completely reversed Alzheimer’s-like symptoms in mice.
After 3 months of once daily oral dosing of this combination therapy, the major markers of Alzheimer’s disease were eradicated; the working memory of the mice was completely restored, inflammation of the brain was reduced and amyloid proteins that had been broken up into plaques causing Alzheimer’s symptoms, were significantly decreased.
Because this study was conducted with mice, there are no guarantees that the results can be replicated in humans. However, they are particularly exciting for two main reasons.
The first is that the dosage used to achieve these results is super reasonable for the average person to ingest. At a rate of 30mg per kilogram of body weight, this can be easily consumed as part of a healthy diet. It’s not too hard when each cup of green tea contains between 50-100mg of EGCG!
And second, there is no need to wait for expensive clinical trials and a new product to hit the shelves to take action right now. There is a massive body of research that already supports the health benefits of green tea for everything from post exercise recovery to diabetes. Plus, it’s inexpensive, readily available and easy to prepare.
Now, not everyone loves a classic cup of hot green tea, but don’t worry! There are plenty of other ways to sneak this health boosting beverage into your diet.
If sipping hot tea all day long isn’t exactly your idea of a good time, then brew a batch and leave it in your fridge to cool. This way you can enjoy it as a refreshing beverage without breaking a sweat.
